For example guy and girl are both from Calgary but are working somewhere far.. like I don't know.. Buenos Aires. They both are in a relationship in that city but once in awhile they meet at a Calgary or Canadian gathering like to watch Flames games together or Grey Cup or Canada in the Olympics or whatever. They become really good friends because of the Calgary connection and it's totally plutonic.

Well if the people are in a relationship that obviously changes things entirely. That's why I left it out of my examples. Because there are a ton of other factors to consider. How faithful are they to their partners, etc? Ask yourself this though, if the two people WEREN'T in a relationship, would that scenario happen? Probably not. He'd either look for a work buddy to go to the games with, or a girl he was interested in dating to go to the games with. Or he'd be going out trying to score with her.
Relationship or no, doesn't really change the overall examples, it just muddies the situation. There's always going to be exceptions to the rules, and weird circumstances that happened to work a certain way making friendship the best dynamic for a male when it comes to a female. But it's never how it starts.
Here's the difference: No (straight? I don't know much about what gay guys think or how it changes the dynamic) guy EVER wakes up and goes, 'Hmmm you know what I need? More female friends. I should actively seek out some platonic relationships with the opposite sex. They could probably help me out with many things in my life.' Oh, and on the off chance they DO think this, it always leads back around to having sex with SOME girl. IE, this one girl has hot friends.
Females however, do seem to have uses for their male friends. Whether it's support, moving furniture, advice on how to deal with their jerk boyfriends (which they promptly ignore of course), or whatever, they do seem to collect and even search out friendships with males.
EDIT: Still not convinced? Tell me which of the two phrases one hears more often:
1. Female: He's great! I love him like a brother! He's so sweet, he's my best friend!
2. Male: She's great! I love her like a sister! She's so sweet, she's my best friend!
