I find that to be especially true for cars in the lower price ranges. In 2007, I bought my first new car, a Toyota Corolla. The 06 and 05 used models were 2k less. It was more worth it to buy new.

As for the OP, as previously said, check out the Ford Focus or Subaru Impreza. I have a Subaru and I love it. It was good value and the AWD is a plus. A co worker of mine recently bought a Kia Rio, the top trim, SX GDI I think. He said he likes it.
