I walked away in March a few years ago, then came back in January the next year. Almost a year.
I've done a few other shorter sabbaticals. I don't pre-announce them though.
A very liberating thing to do. Another world out there. Its never the same for you when you come back and my interest in this place is at a record low. No offence.
My new time-sucking addiction is a directorship for a non-profit Society and I just launched a very successful half marathon awareness/fundraising event that happened last weekend.
Now I have to fire those guys because, as it was with Calgarypuck for a time, I'm having way too much fun and spending too much time doing it. Although, in this case, at least very productive fun for the community.
I think I know what the Captain has on his mind. Its probably not anything to do with a "witch hunt" (hadn't noticed any battles he's been in) but probably more along the lines of being constantly on line defending/debating and finding the repetitive nature of the same arguments with the same people on the other side a complete waste of time. It becomes boring and pointless if not depressing. The fun isn't so much fun anymore.
So, farewell to the Captain. I salute him grabbing his time back.
He'll come back but with different priorities.
