Wow this is getting blown out of proportion.
I would compare Terry more to Chara slashing the back of Burrows leg in front of the net. Burrows falls down, puts his arm in the air waving at the ref, once he makes sure the ref is looking he clutches his leg and roles around. Once a penalty has been given he goes to the bench, is on the ice the next shift no worse the wear. He plays the rest of the game without so much of a thought to his leg. Chara instead of getting a 2 or 5 min penalty, gets a game misconduct and a 1 game suspension.
Was it a penalty? Yes without a doubt. Was it stupid. Incredibly. It almost cost his team a shot at the finals. But the diving and embellishing certainly helped sell it and make it look a lot worse than it actually was. When was the last time someone got carded for diving in a semi-final or final game? I can't even remember.
Check the replay. You can tell someone is really hurt when they make sure the ref is watching before they start rolling on the ground. I still find football painful to watch with the amount of obsurd diving that goes on. In the final for once Drogba wasn't even in the top 10 players diving. I actually can't recall him going to the ground more than 2-3 times in 120+ mins of football. Quite incredible.
And as far as Lanny, Tim Hunter and Pep holding the cup. I didn't post the picture to compare the character or personal lives of the players involved. I'm not defending John Terry. It was one example I could think of of captains who didn't play who came out to hoist a championship trophy. Not to consider or debate the reason they weren't playing. That is all.
I was ecstatic that Chelsea could pull off their last 2 wins with Terry sitting on the bench. I hope I can say the same for England in June.
And as for John Terry spottings...
