I'd give Buffy a go, but be warned the first couple episodes really really suck. The last couple seasons also not the best.

I came into firefly after the fact and loved it and Serenity.
Josh Whedon just plain writes strong dialogue and makes his characters very realistic. the guy also thrives on conflict between characters.
I would agree about the Buffy statement, but the whole series is well worth watching. the first two episodes (Welcome to the Hellmouth) started slow but by the final fight you could see how brilliant the series was going to be. Season 6 wasn't terrible, it just went to a far darker place then people were used to, the quipy, funny charming buffy was gone and left in the grave we got a confused, hardened cynical buffy. But there were some incredibly brilliant episodes that season, off the top of my head "Once more with Feeling", "Normal Again", "Hells Bells". There were a couple of others but I can't remember the titles.
The last season was a bit of a train wreck and went to far to the woman's empowerment thing.
If you want to see Josh Whedon at his best, pretty much the entire run of Angel, with Seasons 4 and 5 being brilliant, four because it was just dark, 5 because it was on a lot of levels hilarious.
