He had Toy Story, at least in part. But I think everyone's on the same page and just arguing semantics. Whedon is a great director and writer, but until now I don't think many of the higher ups thought he would be able to translate to the mainstream audience. I wouldn't call him underrated prior to this though.

I'm one of the people who got into Serenity several months if not years after it came out and I know there's a couple of us out there but there's likely just as many casual fans who had their fill of it and with the last movie I think it more or less was "tied up." Although, even with his Avenger success, I think he'd be hard press to convince a big studio to make a sequel to a 10 year old movie that lost money.
I'd give Buffy a go, but be warned the first couple episodes really really suck. The last couple seasons also not the best.
