That seems very low. Most of the travel medical insurance I've seen has unlimited coverage for the medical costs, but has limits on other things like extra hotel costs for your travel companion and flight re-booking fees.
I think most places will sell you travel medical insurance anytime before you leave, and regardless of whether or not you booked the trip with them.
I have travel medical included with my health insurance from work, so I haven't needed to buy it separately in years, but when I did buy it, I always went to AMA regardless of whether or not I booked my travel with AMA. You can either buy on a per-trip basis or buy for all trips you take in a year.
