It is moments like these that I am happy to have not read the comics prior to watching the show (Similarly so with Contact, although in many respects I actually thought the movie was better than Sagan's book).

I have just finished watching season two again, and as a viewer with no knowledge of the books, I have to say that I do not share your impression of the farm story. I expect that this may have to do with the show producers and writers wanting something different from their story, as I think that the farm brilliantly highlights one of the main features of the show—that is, how different people cope in the different world. This is where a character like Dale becomes so under-appreciated, especially in his exchanges about and with Shane (I love the swamp and guns scene in "Pretty Much Dead Already"). The show itself becomes a study in human behaviour and response to questions of how much one's environment will ultimately shape him or her. I love the constant grappling among characters with how the world has changed, and how it is changing them. It is really one of the most interesting parts of the show.
