As I said, yes, it's possible that it was a random "the next person I see dies" kind of crime, but those are very rare, especially given the location. Yes, it's possible this was an attempted sexual assault that turned into a beating. It's possible the Zetas are responsible.
The simplest explanation is usually the correct one. I did assign 18% probability to the "other" explanations, which I think is pretty reasonable.

Lack of sexual assault: You've seen the medical reports??
Lack of robbery: You've seen the police reports??
Nature of the injuries: This is about all you have to go on, and it's an incredibly weak argument.
Like I said, I agree that the odds would likely support it being someone she knew, such as her husband, but you have absolutely nothing of substance to support that.
