This reminds me of the people that think President Obama (candidate at the time) was disrespecting the U.S. because he didn't put his hand over his heart during the national anthem/pledge of allegiance, or the people that freak out because some elected official didn't wear an American flag pin on their lapel.

There's a big difference between disrespect by omission and disrespect by commission.
Some guy walking down the street without a poppy on, not that big of a deal. But actively deciding "it's meaningless plastic so I aint wearin one" - that's wanton disrespect.
