That's only true if the voucher is for a specific thing. For example, a voucher good for 1 manicure could expire. A voucher good for $50 of spa service cannot. Vouchers are specifically included by name in the Gift Card Regulation of
Alberta's Fair Trading Act.
All of these companies selling these vouchers say the act doesn't apply to their products, but they're not correct in that.

The regulation also does not apply to promotional cards, loyalty cards, phone cards or cards sold for a specific service.
