I have read through the whole thread, and these "inconsiderate" arguments are ridiculous.
I have a younger brother who has type 1 diabetes as well, and it only takes him seconds to lift up his shirt an inch on his left or right side and inject himself with insulin. He does this before every meal and he does this quickly and discreetly. We've had guests who ask what he's doing and he simply just tells them, "Im taking my medicine". People who see this as a big deal are the ones making a big deal out of it.
As for going to the washroom, what most of you dont know is that sitting down is best for injecting into the abdominal area. The fat is the ideal area where you want the insulin to go into and by sitting, collecting fat is easier than say someone who is standing in the washroom when their body is stretched out. I guess you could always sit on the toilet in a stall, but you dont always get that luxury to have a vacant stall in the washroom.
To the OP who had his whole dining experince ruined, unless this guy who was using the syringe was making a whole "look at poor me! I have to give myself a needle!" production out of it, get over yourself. Diabetics dont choose the daily routine of having to inject themselves with needles prior to every meal, waking up in the morning and before they go to bed. They have to because if they dont, they will die.
But I suppose to protect some of the people of the sight of a needle, my brother will have to excuse himself from the table at the restaurant, find the washroom, check if there's a vacant stall, wait for one if there isnt one, inject himself while sitting on the toilet and come right back to the dinner table only to protect you sensitive people for a discrete 5 seconds process which you could've easily looked away from
