Just to play devils advocate here, but what if the majority of voters actually prefer the more centrist option(s) as opposed to those further right? It could be that a lot of voters felt that we should be further right in 2006 but at this point would prefer to be more in the middle?
Maybe its that social conservatism that turns off a lot of would-be voters as well?
