Rugby league is a different game, this is rugby union. In league there might as well not be scrums, you're pretty much allowed to throw it at a 45 degree angle to your side. In union you're supposed to throw it straight down the middle, although obviously this isn't always the case. The advantage is largely due to the ability to know when the ball will be put in. The example of a teammate dropping the puck for a faceoff is a pretty good one.
