Just my thoughts on the matter.
While I agree with the first part of your statement, I don't necessarily agree that the vast majority of addicts have underlying psychological disorders. After being addicted for a while they probably develop disorders but the reasons for taking heroin or other substances could just be for the thrill. There's even a thrill seeking gene and some people genetically can't handle alcohol. Heroin releases endorphins which are naturally occurring and after a while the body stops producing them on the addicts own, so they become addicted. It's a physical addiction which later becomes a mental addiction where they stop thinking in a generally accepted mode.
