Cat wasn't eating, basically became anemic. Took it into the vet who recommended we run some tests and keep it over the weekend on intravenous to replenish vital fluids.

Couple weeks later I discover ON MY OWN that our cat has food allergies and simply feeding him allergenic food fixes everything. And he's still a cat - a very expensive jerk of a cat.

Get pet insurance. Vets will rob you blind.
Both sides of my family are convinced that every once in a while, a cat just up and decides that it's not cost you enough of late, and does something to run up a huge vet bill.

Ours had an absolute freakout around January. Clawing, hissing, charging, attacking...and after a couple days in the vet (and a couple thousand later) we get no answers, but a 'somewhat' calm cat back.

We bring her home, and she's fine around my wife and I, but anytime we have company over...hours of freakout.

Eventually, she stops. We determine that she's now gone completely deaf (instead of the just mostly deaf we knew her to be) and the vet says "Yeah, that is a reaction to their going deaf sometimes. Time will fix it."

And it has. She's fine now, if a bit more standoffish than usual.
