Is it really a stereotype when it's based in reality? Obviously the percentage of the gay population who engage in that particular behavior is inflated, and it that sense stereotypes the entire group, but I don't have a problem with that behavior at the parade when it's people simply being themselves. That's actually what I like about most of the people at pride parades, they're out to just be themselves and be proud to be themselves. I'd say that a large part of the over the top antics come from a desire to take the opportunity to let out a lot of stuff that they are forced to hide on aday to day basis and to do so in a very public way. It's a strange dynamic and can't even begin to fully comprehend, I've never had to hide who I am in any manner simply to live a normal life. There are probably people who use the occassion as a F-U to society, which in some places makes sense, but I think we'll see that group get smaller and smaller as gay rights become somethign that's a given as opposed to an ongoing battle.
