Umm... no. You're missing the point. The Flames had the power to NOT ALLOW Erixon to dictate the terms. The Flames could have just let Erixon re-enter the draft or trade Erixon to another team (presumably for a lesser return). Either of those scenarios would have made it much harder for Erixon to become a Ranger and either of those scenarios would not have made Erixon and his father happy men.

I think you got it completely wrong. Had Erixon signed with the Flames right after he was drafted, the number of ELC years left would have been extended twice since Erixon didn't play at least 10 NHL games last season and didn't do so this season. Erixon would still have 3 years remaining on his ELC in that scenario.
