Late 70's, early 80's.
Al-Qaeda is a North American media term to describe this group. They do not wear special uniforms that say "Al-Qaeda" on them.
They-along with the Taliban, are a loose collection of fighters left over from the Mujahadeen and other groups which were backed by America to defeat Russia in the early 80's.
Speaking of Al-Qaeda, ...I was reading last week that the trial for supposed 9-11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed will now be a military tribunal. The trial was originally to take place in New York, open to the public and the press.
This is all going to clean up quite nicely for the establishment in America. Torture KSM for months and get a "confession" out of him, and then have a closed door military tribunal where nobody will get to hear the evidence. He will be executed and that will be the end of it.
In addition to this, the rebel fighters that America is/will be backing in Libya have significant numbers of Al-Qaeda fighters within its ranks. It is total hypocrisy.
