You can't leave the spellcasting to the AI, no matter what class your main character is. The true general directs his troops from the back where he has a total view of the battlefield.
As for the Bioware "challenges" - there's a new one already after the million downloads one - it's just an attempt to make fans promote the game for free through social media. The rewards are pretty much meaningless.
