Not that my heritage is not relevant to my position on this matter, but my estimate is that I am between 8th and 10th generation North American, with my family moving to Alberta from the US around 1910 or so. The parts of my family that came later than that almost exclusively originated in the British Isles.
I am pretty much as white as you can get.
When I went to school with kids, or worked with adults who were "FOB", you could instantly tell. Like you said they worked very hard to fit in so they could get a good life, respected and often made (with somewhat limited success) attempts to fit in with Canadian culture.
When someone was born here, or came at a very early age, it was like night and day. Never have I come across someone like that who was bitter or held any sort of ill will toward the Canadian way of life in any respect that would be considered abnormal for a Canadian citizen. Are some of them upset? Absolutely, but there are just as many white folks like me who feel the same way about various things, so trying to attribute the contempt you are seeing to people being second gen Canadians is simply foolish and quite likely without any reasonable basis whatsoever.
