The X-Box was quite the revelation in the day. I had a web browser, Linux, emulators, ftp programs etc. The crown jewel in any Xbox owners' collection was the XBMC (X-Box Media Center). You could stream audio, video, pictures all from your PC. It played tons of different formats. If I remember correctly you could even grab the local weather and play the shows saved on your PC Windows Media Center. The only reason I retired it is because it choked on HD files because of hardware limitations. It did things that even modern devices don't do.

It's too bad that the developers of XBMC have stated that they have no plans to port it to the PS3.
I bought an Xbox specifically for the Xbox Media Centre. To this day, I have never played a game on that Xbox. I think it came with a game, but it remains unopened in it's shrink wrap. XMC was pretty sweet for an anime junkie like me. It played everything, and was easy to update.

I've also semi retired it for the same reason you did in that it can't HD files, but I still have it connected to an old tv in my house in case I wanted to access normal SD stuff off my computer.
