You are understanding correctly.
Where the glitch becomes a little more useful is when you have legend card and points in a category are insanely expensive, so +10 can be useful. But it is only +2 more than a +5 & +3. Using three boost slots for one attribute takes away from other skills.
For example, when I was testing the glitch my overall was still only an 83 in game and I did not feel it gave me any significant advantage (I still only have vet card). And while increased attributes are certainly helpful, there are other aspects of the game that are much more important. If your team is good at the game and have 77 overall players with Pro cards, you will still beat a team of 88 overall players with Legend cards if they aren't good at the game.
