It is also the cultural norm here in Calgary to spend disgusting amounts on your car, and wear garbage clothes. Pay $300 for a pair of jeans, and people will make fun of you. However, they won't even sneeze at paying $1000 for mechanical work to their $50K truck.

Many places in the world outside Calgary have it the other way around. People walk/subway it around town and spend their car money on clothes. Just priority.

To me, if you get out of an expensive car on Friday night, and are wearing jogging pants, your priorities are screwed up, but again that is just my opinion.
For me its the opposite. If you're wearing $300 jeans and living in a 500 sqft apartment riding the bus everywhere your priorities are screwed. Especially in Calgary where you need a vehicle to get around. Who honestly cares about brand names? I think you'd be daft to spend hundreds or thousands more on clothes for a perceived superior name. At least the $50k truck has some utility to it, and will be around long after those nice clothes are out of style. I don't see people wearing $300 jeans doing anything but looking pretty. You'd probably cry if you spilled oil or paint on them. The argument they last longer is also laughable. If I spend $300 on 5 pairs of jeans I guarantee they'll be around longer than 1 pair of $300 jeans.
