Attitude mostly. Typical professional athlete. Leadership has always been overrated primarily because he's a Yankee. Defence he's average, offensively he hasn't had huge power numbers either. Average wise the guy has always been solid, but the Yanks have always been a successful team which is why he gets so many accolades, and I've never liked the guy because of being overrated. We were seeing the same thing with Joba until his recent off-field troubles.
As for Mauer, his numbers are huge, and personally I don't care if the Twins never made the playoffs, but he's done absolutely amazing this year. Baseball's more of a team sport so it's really hard to discount a guy because his team never made the playoffs (I'd argue that it's almost impossible in baseball for a guy to carry the team). Mauer would be my choice for MVP.
