The key to a successful film is having a psychological connection between Batman and the enemy. That's why I don't really like the idea of the Riddler. He's pretty campy and not malicious enough. There needs to be that real feeling on dread and horror. That's why the Dark Knight worked so well. You only really capture that with a couple enemies.
Which is why I bet they're evaluating whether they'll recast Joker because he's perfect to create that fit.

I think Nolan said the same thing once about the Riddler character. However, I don't see why The Riddler can't be written any way they want him to be. I'm playing the Arkham Asylum 360 game, and the Riddler sounds a little scarier than I've ever seen. You should hear his riddle about babies.
