Can anyone offer me any advise on buying from a private seller vs a used car lot? Is this mistrust legitimate, or is there good deals to be had at used car lots?
The automobile industry has had to clean up its act in a very big way over the last few years.
Automotive dealerships are now required to be part of AMVIC (ALBERTA MOTORVEHICLE INDUSTRY COUNCIL).
All vehicles must go through a mechanical fitness report and that report must be provided to you. That report cannot be any older than 2 weeks old and must be certified by a registered automotive mechanic.
Insurance has become a big issue in the industry in that we are not allowed to "hide" things. If the customer becomes involved in an accident on their way home from the dealership and its proven that the dealer was at fault for not providing a proper mechanical inspection, there's hell to pay. And rightfully so.
Trying doing that in a private deal. Private deals do not have to disclose anything. period. buyer beware.
will yuo pay more at a dealership than a private sale?..maybe. but sometimes that isnt always the case.
I would be more inclined to purchase a vehicle from a dealer rather than a private. just for the peace of mind.
