why? Data from ST:TNG did not use them, and i thought it was a good idea. i started to not use them in my speech and also in my writing. i use them now when i speak, but still refuse to use contractions in my writing. i will even re word a sentence in order to avoid the use of contractions.
also, at the time, i was in school. not using contractions increases your word count when writing papers.

I believe it is considered poor form to use contractions in formal papers.
