I looked up and watched the very first Conan episode from the early 1990s last night. Maybe it's just because my expectations were so low from everyone saying the first few seasons were awful (I just dont remember anymore, I was 12), but I actually thought it was pretty funny fun. People were so out of touch then. The man was a huge part of SNL's gigantic ratings in the years immediately preceding his debut on Late Night. 1987-1991 are, in my opinion, at the very top of the list of great SNL seasons.
People didn't know he wrote for the show...it was the same stuff.
