People were so out of touch then. The man was a huge part of SNL's gigantic ratings in the years immediately preceding his debut on Late Night. 1987-1991 are, in my opinion, at the very top of the list of great SNL seasons.

People didn't know he wrote for the show...it was the same stuff.
