The export file states that you need a copy of the RB1 disk to play the RB1 songs in future RB titles. So I figured there would be some kind of copy protection involved.
With that in mind, went and bought a used copy of RB1 thinking my system would ask me for the disk id # or manual id # or something when I exported. To my surprise, it did not and it simply downloaded all the RB1 songs to the hard drive of my PS3. The next time I put RB2 in, they were all there, sorted into RB2 categories of difficulty (and they now play occassionally when I do a random set - all without the RB1 disk).
So I guess the short answer is that I could have saved a bit more $$$ by simply renting or borrowing from a friend. At least I saved a bit by buying used instead of new.
