Unlike most of the other candidates, McCain has been exposed to the actual horrors of war.
Most people that have been there don't want to repeat it.
Bush Jr - Never fought in a war
Clinton - Never Served
Bush Sr - Pilot in the air force
Jimmy Carter - Never served
