I'd assume that from a Christian perspective, they realize that indoctrinating children at a young age is the only way they have a chance at holding the children's beliefs through their lives. I'd guess that the ratio of children who are raised atheist and convert to christianity at some point through their lives is fairly miniscule, compared to the ratio of children who are raised as christians but convert to atheism. Christianity really depends on that head-start.
