The whole Democrat/Republican dynamic has been flipping for quite some time now. It used to that the Democrats were a party that supported the idea of nation building and extreme foreign policy. The Republicans used to be isolationists. In fact, it was Kennedy's policies in Iraq that started the motions of supporting a Baathist controlled Iraq. Later on, the Republicans under Reagan strengthened this policy which probably had a lot to do with Bush Sr.'s unwillingness to remove Saddam Hussein.

The irony is pretty astonishing that many of the "conservatives" who support the current Republican party under Bush are in fact supporting foreign policies that are not conservative in their nature.
