MAYBE, the white guy in Japan is actually the guy in the present (the boogie man) who is killing the group. This could make sense as he was the one wearing the symbol PLUS Hiros' dad said he needed Ando to get hima sword, and the white guy is a sword master. So the fighting would take place in a sowrd battle of course. Also, the white guy may have some sort of power that makes him live longer, hence why Hiro was warped to the past to kill him there or prevent the white guy from gaining a very strong power in the past.

First thing I thought of when I saw the white guy as well in feudal Japan was that he was from the future as well. There has to be a good reason as to why the writers decided to make him a foreigner. The show would have alot more of a 'cool' factor if Hiro is trained by agreat Japanese warrior than by an English gent who likes to drink. Me thinks there's more to Takeo's presence in feudal Japan than what people are led to believe.
As well, I love how the show can pick random new characters from all corners of the earth. Due to the nature of the show and the atmosphere in which the characters are introduced are developed, it's interesting when new, exotic places are shown. For example, the Honduras and Ireland were involved in the show last night. I love the fact they can play almost any place into the storyline. Anyone here hoping for a hero from Canada? Or more specifically, Calgary?
