I would guess the number of people that bring two pieces must be pretty small. I've never done it, you can take one pretty huge one if you need to.

Not great optics for the company. Why did they do it when announcing a huge profit increase? Couldn't they have done this at a different time?

Gotta watch the weight of one massive bag, they will charge extra if it's too heavy.

They added the charge for the 2nd bag, but lowered the cost of a 3rd and 4th bag. (to $50 from $75)

Also restrictions on dimensions. Most airlines have those specifications cleared marked on their websites, as to length, width, and depth allowed.

So let me get this straight. The wife flies for free but I need to pay $20 for her sister?

I would be a fan of having the first two checked bags are free but airlines actually enforcing their carry-on rules. If it doesn't fit in that metal cage thing, it doesn't come into the cabin. Women don't get to carry on a massive "carry-on bag" AND a "purse" that could double as a dress. Men don't get to have their second personal item as a laptop bag 80% of the the size of their massive carry on.
In fact, I would go as far as to say that for flights shorter than 3 hours, $500 per second item for carry-on. I hate overcrowded cabins.

I've about had it with Westjet. They try to push themselves as a low-cost air carrier, but they are dollar for dollar the same price as Air Canada, with nowhere near as close of the ammenities and crappier flight times.
I saved $500 bucks ($250/ticket) flying to Vegas on United out of Calgary. How the hell is that a low-fare airline
If Westjet wants to play with the big boys, it should stop this low-cost carrier. I honestly don't give two turds if their flight attendants smile at me and wish me good evening, all I care about is getting to where I'm going at the lowest possible cost.

Yup. That's where the problem is. You have these goddamn women with their 150 pound carry-on (plus their purse) taking all the space in the cabin. You don't fit in the specified space, you pay $50 bucks. They'd make a mint off of it. Likely more than they would with a second bag because most people don't check a 2nd bag anyways.

You're right, that doesn't seem very fair at all.
Sorry, couldn't resist.

You could thank Westjet for keeping Air Canada's fares so low. Also, who travels with more than one large bag and a carry on and a personal item (laptop/purse).
I've flown with west jet and the largest piece of luggage in my set fits under their restrictions. Add to that a decent sized carry-on and I think it should cover 95% of people flying anywhere westjet flies.
For most of my trips within N.A. I have a carry-on and a personal item. This doesn't seem like a big deal.

Well I don't think a seperate press release to announce this would make much sense, either. It's not like it's a material change or anything that would require disclosure. I bet a lot of companies would have just made the change to their prices online and in their literature and not announced it at all. I don't think it's bad optics at all - it's completely neutral, IMO.

At least they aren't charging for the first piece of checked luggage. When they do, you'll find out what it's like to have a cabin cramped with carry-on....

At first I was going to say that an average of 150 pounds would be an overly low estimate. But then I realized you were talking about the carry-on.
They should start charging fatter people more - $20/pound above <insert random magic number here>
