Motorcycle Noise Bylaw (Edmonton)
I thought that this was kind of interesting. Edmonton is proposing a bylaw to cut down/eliminate the "Excessive" noise from motorcycles.
http://www.edmontonsun.com/news/edmo.../14245466.html
I can't help but agree that motorcycles can get awfully loud, and being a member of the motorcycle community, I can confirm that a select number of riders are constantly on the search for the 'loudest pipes possible'.
I find it sad that we have to legislate common decency, but I understand the desire for the bylaw. The only thing I don't understand.......what about the hillbilly who's always on the hunt for louder pipes on his diesel dually? Dunno, but I hear far more pickups and rice-mobiles (year round, I might add).

I ride also and support an initiative to get those idiots off the road who think it's their God-given right to annoy everyone else with their obnoxious bikes.

Good to see. I've seen cars targeted but found bikes running through the underpasses downtown to be much worse and go unnoticed.

YES! My first opportunity to bust on "Shantz Law" (after first proposing it in the tinted window thread).
Yup searching the comments, the third one on that site was a great example of Shantz's Law.
This is ridiculous. I can't count how many times that my pipes have saved me from some bone head in a car doing something other than paying attention. One rev on that throttle and they wake up. Happened last night on Gateway blvd. Black SUV kept creeping into my lane, i hit the throttle and the driver started paying attention. when i got beside him at a red light, i suggested that he close the laptop, yes a LAPTOP, and pay attention. That comment warranted him to tell me to F*** O**....ya, ticket the guy with the pipes.....cash cow
EDIT: OH SWEET GLORY!
Not too far after that one is a great example of the Corrolary.
Honestly, the city has no better things to enforce. our streets are rampid with crime from daily shootings and stabbing but yet they want to deploy their resources to deal with noise violations. i live downtown on jasper and still don't have an issue with the motorcycles. these guy's and gals get only a few months of the year to ride their motorcycles and yet it's a big problem. this is just as stupid as the city investing all that money into the recycle bins that play a tune when u recycle. city councel should take their heads out of their asses and maybe start doing something to address real problems rather then address the concern of a few people who don't have a life other then to complain about others.
For those that have no idea what I'm talking about, here is my original proposal for Shantz's Law:

Well at least they are setting a fixed rate of loudness. I used to own a Ducati thumper which was a little loud but completely stock but our small town cops still gave me a ticket. Sometimes they just like to harass motorcycle riders.

BTW, I don't know if any of you guys heard, but I just happened to hear on 660 this morning that Calgary will likely be the first city in North America to bring in a mike/camera combo (now used in Australia) to target noisy vehicles. It would work like the supernova - owners of vehicles that are too noisy would get a ticket in the mail. Don't ask me how it would work - I am not a sound technician. Just FYI.

Also am for it. Especially when trying to sleep or am out fishing. The sooner it happens the better.

Edmonton is a filthy pit. Why are they worrying about sound? What about all the trash? Won't somebody think about the jogging pant epidemic?

I don't ride, but isn't one of the purposes of a loud motorcycle to give cars a warning that there is indeed a motorcycle around?
People don't shoulder check enough as it is, and if you can't hear the thing in your car, i'm willing to bet motorcycle accidents go up.

No, I'm pretty sure is so that they can drive up and down 17th ave and rev their engines to alert everyone that they have a small crank.

Quoted for emphasis!
I can only hope Calgary implements a similar by-law. The sooner I can sit on a patio and not have to listen to bikes rev as they ride by again and again the better!

Don't motorcycles come equipped with horns?

That's what most people with annoyingly loud pipes will say, but the fact of the matter is guys with bikes put loud pipes on becasue they like the way it sounds. I put louder pipes on my first bike. It's not rediculously loud, but I did it for the sound, not the safety.
Trust me, anyone that thinks it makes it that much safer, needs to try riding in front of my old bike, and then switch to riding behind it, and they'll figure out real fast that those pipes don't help at all when it comes to cars in front of you hearing you.

Many a summer day has been ruined for people living around Highway 22, by the sound of motorcycles roaring up the valley, all day and evening.

See my post above - it's coming. All those punk driving giant lawnmowers are about to feel the wrath of Bronco/Kent Hehr.
