Would you support having to take a course before having a baby?
This probably sounds like a joke, but im being dead serious. Too many new parents are unprepared onto how to raise a healthy child. Many times exposing them to stuff which will be detrimental to their health.
I'm not suggesting this course to tell you how to raise your child, but just the basics that so many parents don't know. A lot of parents can hardly take care of themselves, and I think a course on the basics of raising a child would be beneficial to both the kid and parents.
Does any place in the world require new parents to take something like this?
Thoughts?

There is more information on child raising now then there ever has been in human history.
Kids today are far more prepared than any other generation that came before them.
Thoughts?

I think before they rushed you out of the hospitals as fast as possible, the new moms were given a few days after delivering to learn from the nurses just what to do for a newborn. I would prefer to be given more time in the hospital so things like that could be taught versus a class.

The people who cannot take care of a child properly are likely too ignorant to register for a course.

Everyone I know went to a weekend course sometime during the pregnancy to learn about the birthing process and how to take care of the baby afterwards. Warning signs to look out for (mom and baby) etc etc etc.
We did even though it was 100% common sense and a waste of time for us. BUt there was good chunk of people that actually didn't know the simplest things.

In my psychology 30 class in high school (developmental psych), we had a class where groups had to form an argument as to why they should be given the right to have a child. This argument was then presented to a committee who would "decide" if those parents got the right to conceive. We were using the same underlying principle: that you have to be qualified to have a child.
While the idea is good in that there would be fewer neglected/harmed children, I just can't see how it could ever be logistically enforced. Is a hospital going to turn away a mother in labour that didn't attend the course? Will a doctor perform an abortion because a pregnant woman refuses to attend? Of course those are over the top examples, but I think you get my general point.

My wife is pregnant and many friends have recommended the Birth and Babies course provided by AHS. It's a no-brainer as I have no idea how those babies work.
I thought my job was done and thought I was being nice by offering my wife a ride to the hospital when she goes into labour. Apparently I have to do a bit more than that.

I think that there should be punishment for the parents if they don't take the course. No punishment should be punishment for the baby though so a financial punishment would be out of question. Honestly I don't know what the punishment could be but I thought this was a interesting debate.
Any punishment ideas?
