The decent into socialist hell begins and all thanks to the godless, evil democrats. May god have mercy on their souls.

I honestly think this is great for the Americans. Might tear the country in half, but I think it's best for them.

Yeah, how dare all those poor and unemployed people get viable medical treatments.

It is a slap in the face to american freedom that insurance companies can no longer deny service based on "pre-existing conditions" and deny sick children proper health care.

Your tax dollars would be much better spent on the defence budget. At least that way American lives would actually be saved because, you know, without spending half a trillion dollars on the military the terrorists would have already won and you wouldn't have health care.

I haven't really followed this, and don't really have the time to do much research on it. I just searched through cnn.com quickly...

Can someone give me the coles notes on what exactly these means for Americans, and how their system differs from the Canadian system now.

I know it will take time to fully implement, but everyone is covered now right?

I'm sure someone is willing to put in the effort to actually explain it in detail.

Since I'm not, I'll just quote part of the Herald article and that'll give you a general idea for now.

Quote:
The final bill imposes an “individual mandate” requiring Americans to buy health insurance at risk of being fined if they do not. To make insurance more affordable, the legislation offers federal subsidies for lower and middle-class Americans. It also expands funding to states for Medicaid, the public insurance plan for the nation’s poorest citizens. Children will be able to stay on their parents’ insurance plans through age 26.

The bill would immediately bar insurance companies from denying coverage to sick children and — by 2014 — make it illegal to deny insurance to anyone with a pre-existing condition. It also includes provisions to prevent massive premium hikes and to eliminate the practice of setting lifetime limits on coverage.

It's amazing that the wealthiest country on earth does not have universal healthcare. A society that allows profit motive to decide whether someone is covered and recieves care even if it is a matter of life or death, is a rather sick society. It's almost impossible to fathom.

I'm glad I live in Canada.

If you go to an emergency room they have to see you.

I dont have health insurance, but the way this bill was bullied through is what pisses me off. I believe we can have a "socialized" system but not with all these kick backs for states and the fact that the country doesn't want this is a joke.

They also want me to believe that they will take my tax money and not spend it for four years? Not with this obama spendaholics

Ummm, people should only be going to emergency rooms in the event of emergency. Most medical issues are not emergencies, and should not be treated in an emergency room. In fact, that people are coming to emergency rooms for non-emergencies because they have no health insurance is compromising the ability of ERs to treat real emergencies.

It's going to suck when Obama is crowned the communist king and all of America's poor citizens become slaves to the great lords of socialism. All hail Karl Marx! Yaaarrrgh! Here be pirates!

I understand Bunk, But this bill is a joke the way it was chicago politic pushed through.

I'm just pissed that we could of made a bill that would be better for the government and American people but NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

1. Get taxed
2. get taxed for four years hoping our Government doesn't spend this money?

3. still have to purchase health care in 4 years, Either Obama care or private health care.

4. if you cant afford either? well you get a fine in the mail from your government!

YEAH, sounds fair.

Okay, I'm trying to calm down so I can post.

1. we get taxed more for the next four years. This "insurance" wont start for four years.

2. 4 years of tax dollars we hope the government doesn't spend a dime of it on other crap.

3. This isn't free insurance per say. We have a choice on private or Purchasing Obama Care. We still get taxed and have to purchase one or the other. If we don't purchase either we get fined.

So, say I get taxed $40 a month for this and Obama care is $400/MO and Private is $410/mo and I still can't afford it I get fined. So in reality Obama care will cost $440/mo. It's not socialized like Canadian system.

does that shed light on it?

One thing about this bill that bugs me. If you don't have health insurance nor do you want to carry health insurance is it pretty much turns you into a criminal.

I know you would think "who wouldn't want health insurance." My barber is self employed, doesn't have health insurance and doesn't need health insurance. She can pay a hospital bill without insurance, but because of this she is going to be out of her pocket a health insurance premium every month or get fined. It is ridiculous.

And nice waffle by Obama. Mr. I support a public option. Crooked liar just like every other American politician.

The health insurance companies strongly apposed this plan, and fought it tooth and nail with everything they had. That's all I need to know, I support it.

So you're not a big fan of the Canadian healthcare system?

According to the quote above from Flip, if you can't afford it, you'll be subsidized.
Quote:

I suppose how much this subsidy really entails is unknown.

But I can see the frustration with this type of Universal health care. Getting a GP nowadays is hard enough and getting a referral to a specialist is even worse. I have a family member with a bad skin disorder and the referral to see a specialist was over half a year. While this wasn't life or death, she had the most itchy skin every day and made me felt sick to my stomach. Good thing I have a lot of doctors in my family or man...

Said that, I think it's better that everyone has access to healthcare, and your wallet doesn't determine whether you get treatment.

So if you can't pay, what happens? How large is the fine? Do you keep getting fined until you can afford it, or what? Thrown in jail? Thrown into the Deathcamps?
