***************Update********************

Ok much to the delight of 7uongo I have had to end the ESPN subscription fundraisers to Canadians. The lady in charge wrote me and said she was mistaken when she said they could accept Canadian orders. Dont worry the Canadian orders that were submitted were approved but I can no longer accept anymore Canadian orders. I can still accept US orders though. So if your stateside and still interested PM me.

Update 3-19-10
Season starts 2nd Sunday in April....Our First Inter Squad Scrimmage is tonight... First live action most of the team has ever seen so it should be interesting. My wife will be video taping. If any hilarity ensues I will post the vid here!!

Thanks again for all your support!!!! Alot of the guys and family members want MoonDawg T-shirts... Hopefully we can get them cheap enough that I can send all the people who have helped out a T-shirt.
==================================

First Off I want to say Thank you to Jiri and the mods for letting me post this as I PM'd them for approval first.

Most of the people who know me on these boards know I am from Oklahoma, married a Calgarian, fell in love with our Flames, and pretty much learned most of what I know about Hockey from here. I love this site so Thanks ! Anyway I finally decided to find a beginners league to start or join a team. I am getting tired of my wife's 10 yr old cousin's team dominating me when I come to Calgary for Christmas. All the beginners league's teams were full so I decided to start my own Team. The team is made up mostly of guys I have been competing with or against since I was playin tee-ball and pee wee football. We love to compete and consider ourselves pretty athletic. Most of us played college sports on scholarships, a few of us got offered scholarships in 2 sports, 1 of us got offered in 3 sports. ( that was me , I just wanted to throw that in to one up my friends.)

However back to Hockey! I am constantly talking hockey and trying to get my friends to commit to playing. Finally I got everyone involved and we checked out the price to play. It was pretty expensive, especially for beginners. Then I realized everyone but me will have to buy all of their equipment. After the math I realized that it will be quite tough to do this without some help somewhere. It pretty much comes down to , if we cant get either the equipment or the league paid for we probably will not be able to play. That simple. I felt bad since I got everyone excited about playing so I looked into fundraisers and found a few. We eventually teamed up with Espn.com and ESPN the magazine . Simply put , we sell so many magazines, they pay for our league!

I called the ESPN and asked if I could sell ( and would espn) ship to Canadians since I do have family in Canada. They said Yes to both accounts.

I know there are tons of sport enthusiast so anyway here is the deal.
We offer 2 yr subcriptions for $40.00 usd. Thats 52 issues, one every 2 weeks. It also includes Espn insider on ESPN.com. The insider alone is 2 bucks a month if you buy it for 2 years. They usually sell the magazine for a dollar an issue on ESPN.com . So it is a pretty good deal.

The Kicker is this: We really want to play hockey. We get a $ amount per every subscription we sell. We sell so many magazines , it pays for our league. If you buy a subscription from me I will donate 5 dollars per to Calgarypuck. Yes , thats right $5 dollars per subscription we get from CP.

So not only would you be helping Me and a bunch of newb Hockey players, learn the sport of your great country ... your also helping CP.

How it would work is this. You want one , You PM me . I can do one of two things. I can accept payment Via paypal and send your info to ESPN and your magazine is sent to me .

Or I can send you out an Email from my team ( which is the OKlahoma MoonDawgs) page at ESPN. This will come to you and you will pay ESPN directly through their website.
If you have neither and Credit Card or Paypal... Don't worry I can still get it taken care of, just PM me.

I really would appreciate your help! If not , that is Ok . Let me say that fundraising is quite embarrassing to me. I absolutely hate it ! However, if this is the difference between getting to play or not playing , I will do it .
If I didn't use CP , then I wouldn't be exhausting every option I have.
If you would like to donate or help in any other way please pm me as well! Also if you know anyone else who would be interested, please send them this way!

I know this is long but Thanks for your time!!!

Also , for some reason it wont load the page when I hit edit, so I might add that yesterday the moved the league up from End of May to middle of April.

So our time is quite short , we will prob run this til first or middle of march. However, we turn in the subscriptions as we get them, so if you buy now you wont have to wait til the end of march to get your subscription turned in.

Well I will be honest if we just had to pay the league fees it wouldnt be so bad. We could make due easier. Its x mount bucks for 15 games. 12 players max. So $400 a person for half the gamesas you..... and its 1hr games.. 60 mins, 3 x18 min period clock only stops to switch sides. I have went and watched and they run em like cattle , games always on time .

The thing is being beginners , everyone has to buy all their own gear. We dont have used gear shops to buy from here . Hockey monkey gave use a deal for everything but skates , helmet , gloves, and sticks that seems pretty reasonable. Also we might have to purchase all the goalie equipment and then rotate every game who plays in goal. I think i have got my uncle to donate his old gear , if he can find it all!

So really if we dont get help we wont be able to afford to play. Its not something I like admitting but its the truth. I hate fundraising and asking for money but like I said , I will do it in this case if it means having the chance to try to play something I have acquired a love for. So, its feel like an idiot and asking for help or not playing . Ill play the idiot for a while and hopefully reap the rewards and enjoyment when my friends fall in love with this sport as much as I have.

We plan on having my wife tape our games and cutting it into a little Highlite, more like blooper, video to give to the people who helped us out . DO you think its going overboard to do the theo slide when I score my first ever goal in league ?

However Thanks Rico again for helping . I understand not everyone has the money to spare, or has to pay for themselves and their kids to play and thats fine. I wouldnt want this to take away from you and your family. I understand that a lot of people pay a lot of money for hockey. I am just saying if you want to help , and can afford to then it would be very very appreciated by a bunch of guys really wanting to learn to play hockey!

Nicker,
I wonder what it would cost to send down some old (but in good shape) equipment I have.
I intend to keep gloves, helmet, shin pads forever, but I have elbow pads, pants, older helmet, etc. that i could part with.

Maybe if others see this we could pool some stuff we don't use and ship it.

No idea on cost, but shipping might be too expensive anyway. Just a thought.

GOOD THOUGHT AENEAS,

I dont know what shipping would be but I know Ken has offered to ship some stuff to me from an ad in B/S section. I think its shins, elbows, gloves. You might ask Ken how much shipping is . As always anything would be appreciated and put to very good use!!!

Also I might add, I havent gotten all the fundraiser stuff to the rest of the team because I just got it friday. There are only 3 people with the info til monday. Here is the progress reports. On the magazines our team has sold 19 subscriptions. 1 of them being here on CP.

Also the Wives of the team wanted to sell tubs of cookie dough here, and we have sold about 30 tubs of cookies. Cookies dont raise as much money . I think we have to sell 350 tubs of cookies to make 1200 bucks.

anyway there is the status, thanks for reading and thanks for helping!

Just wanna give an update. I finally met the guy in charge of the leagues tonight. He is a very nice guy. By the way , his son was a defenseman for the World jrs USA team this year! However I explained our problem and that we were trying to fundraise like crazy. He said he would work with us. He never gave me a price but said He has seen us at stick and pucks and wants us to play since we always look excited.

Also another person who played in an upper league overheard our conversation and not only did he buy a magazine subscription , he donated an Easton S-17 stick. It has a chip in the heel, but I can tape it and let someone use it or possibly cut it and make it a 2 piece. So pretty exciting. I will take pics at our saturday stick and puck!!

also I got my first hockey injury today ... My friend send a pass my way and i was going to try and scoop it and bounce it on my blade just goofing around... Instead of scooping it up it just went straight up the blade and got me in the shin with no shin guards... OUCH !!! I have a hugh welt and its already black and blue HAHA!!! and the sad thing, is I am showing it off to everyone and am proud of it !!!! LOL!!!

I have some equipment as well. If anyone is organizing shipping stuff down, I have a set of gloves, shoulder pads, elbow pads and shin pads. I'll even throw in $5-10 for shipping too!

You played hockey with no shin pads? Good lord that's almost as bad as playing hockey with no skates!

I have some SHIN pads I can give if people are organizing a mass shipment.

Bump. Another subscription sold ... right here!

Cool idea, nickerjones. I'm glad to get involved in this. It's awesome to hear abolut hockey growing at a grassroots level in non-traditional markets.

I would imagine it would be pretty easy to get equipment donations here before magazine subscriptions.

I'm a pretty lazy guy, so if someone showed up at my door I'd kick in a bunch of my old gear (gloves, sticks, helmet, elbow pads, socks, shoulder pads, etc)

Want my old can?
