Pretty good for the NFL since they don't measure the American channels or Sunday Ticket subscribers.

I like this info. Keep one thread going, so you don't have to make a new one each week.

yea, they had the playoff ratings last spring, so they should have the weekend hockey this year as well, not sure about midweek games, but likely

I don't see how they can accurately track what people are watching in bars, especially with sports like the NFL where several games are being shown at once on multiple TVs.

its a stats thing, like when they have election coverage and before the election have predictions which are accurate within 2.5%, they don't ask everyone in canada, only like a 1000 people (may not be the right number, but you get the idea). anyways BBM now has people wear PPMs or personal people meters. basically pagers which take in any signals from tvs and radios when they are on, even when they are muted. they have random people wear them across canada (my family had them for awhile, but 3 of the 4 of us kept forgetting to wear them, they are a bit bulky). basically it makes it more accurate as it is based on people recieving signals, instead of how many tvs are tuned in.
it supposedly gets around the bar issue. but who knows, it seems to be the most accurate numbers we can get

Now that so many people have digital boxes, can ratings be determined directly from the cable companies?

i would think so. i used to think they actually took signals from peoples cable boxes/tvs etc, of course this was never the case.
I would think they could keep track of it with digital boxes, but maybe theres a privacy issue or something like that preventing them from doing that. i would think they would use those numbers if they could. of course there is no way you could accurately measure in bars where there may be 50 people, many of them there at the same time as football and not watching, and some watching multiple games at once. would you measure the bystanders as viewers? would you count everyone in the room for each tv that has a different game on?

quick update from last night,
BBM Canada overnight data confirms 1.13 million Canadians watched TSN's broadcast of the Edmonton win over Saskatchewan on Sunday afternoon. The tight game featured some last minute heroics with a late touchdown to seal a 31-27 victory.

smokin good numbers, it was a good game in prime football viewing time. rest of the top 10 should be out in the next day or so for this weekend

Default update!!

for sep 18-21

Week three of the new ratings system continues to produce good news for the Canadian Football League. The only sports broadcast that topped 1 million over the past weekend was Sunday afternoon's Edmonton-Saskatchewan game.
TSN says it was an all-time record for a regular-season game on the specialty channel, but with this new system we're going to see a lot of records.
Note, that was a Sunday afternoon game, head to head against the The Mighty NFL. All the NFL could do up against the three-down game was 532,000 on City and Sportsnet. Note again that in the Toronto region, that was the Buffalo-Tampa Bay game.
In fact, CFL games took four of the top seven spots, though it must be noted that the Sunday night NFL game that drew 647,000 on TSN probably closer to 800,000 or 900,000 because it was also on NBC.
It was also a good weekend for NASCAR, which attracted 243,000 to TSN2. That race was also on ABC, which means at least 500,000 Canadians tuned in to that race.
Here are the overnight ratings for English Canada, as supplied by BBM Research:
1. CFL, Eskimos at Roughriders, Sunday, TSN: 1,127,000
2. CFL, Stampeders at Tiger-Cats, Friday, TSN: 863,000
3. NFL, Patriots at Jets, Sunday, CTV: 852,000
4. NFL, Colts at Dolphins, Monday, TSN: 741,000
5. CFL, Blue Bombers at Alouettes, Sunday, TSN: 687,000
6. NFL, Giants at Cowboys, Sunday, TSN: 647,000*
7. CFL, Argonauts at Lions, Saturday, TSN: 634,000
8. NFL, Late afternoon games, Sunday, Sportsnet/City: 532,000
9. Equestrian, Show jumping, Saturday, CBC: 361,000
10. Baseball, Blue Jays at Rays, Friday, Sportsnet: 327,000
11. Baseball, Blue Jays at Rays, Saturday, Sportsnet: 297,000
12. Auto racing, NASCAR Sylvania 300, Sunday, TSN2: 243,000**
13. Soccer, Portsmouth at Aston Villa, Saturday, Sportsnet: 175,000
14. Auto racing, IRL Japan, Sunday, TSN: 142,000
* Viewers for NBC not calculated
** Viewers for ABC not calculated.

good numbers for the weekend, with NBC the sunday night NFL game did better, but not competing against anything at that timeslot.

I don't understand why CFL goes head-to-head with the NFL. They would have even better ratings I think, if all the games were Friday and Saturday. Saturday afternoons could be a package of a CIS game, then two CFL games.

11:00 am - CIS game, 2:00 pm CFL game #1, 5:00 pm CFL game #2 (this won't work once HNIC starts).

Not trying to be a dick, but your post is a little hard to understand. My post was in response to you making a big deal about a CFL game, with arguably the two largest fanbases in Canada, putting up big numbers against "the mighty NFL" game between two markets that nobody outside of Toronto/Buffalo and Tampa gives a crap about.

Trying to compare the CFL vs. NFL in television ratings is a waste of time in Canada because one is regionalized and the other isn't. The only true way to compare it would be to put the CFL's banner Friday night game against the Sunday or Monday night game; but as you've pointed out, even that has its flaws.

I'm actually glad to see the CFL putting up strong numbers. I love seeing football grow in popularity in Canada.

ok fair enough rube. i guess i started off commenting on your comment, saying "whats your point" as it is still a comparison between two games on. the nfl game on was not the biggest game, as noted in the source, but its just a comparison. just shows some nfl-only fans that the CFL is indeed popular and will be watched over an nfl game. the 'mighty nfl' comment wasn't mine, but was from the source, though that doesn't take away from the point that the CFL dominated the sunday afternoon slot.

the rest of my post i went off on a tangent.
anyways its interesting to see the numbers, and thats the point of this thread. i agree, its always good to see strong viewing numbers for football in Canada.

they might have better ratings doing friday and saturdays only, but i kinda doubt it. fridays are tough because many people like to go do things on a friday night, and if someone is going to watch football all day on sunday, they aren't that likely to watch all day saturday as well. the other problem with saturday is it is college football day, so many people who do stick around the house on a saturday watch american or canadian college football already.
it might work to do that, they have in the past, but they must like the sundays as people plan to watch football and relax on a sunday anyways. also they have to have sunday games at McGill once school starts because of the CIS football.
that said, i would love for more CIS to be on tv, on tsn or cbc. sometimes games are on shaw or the score which is great, but shaw isn't the best quality and the score only shows the ontario conference games and is low quality too. its a great thing this year that the CIS semis and Vanier cup will be on TSN finally. awesome.

Fair enough. I think "dominated" is a pretty bold statement to make when most of the ratings system is set up to favour the CFL. I also think that who was playing had a bigger impact than simply an "NFL vs. CFL" angle. I can pretty much guarantee that if the game was something like Montreal vs. Winnipeg the ratings wouldn't have been nearly as high. It'd be just as unfair if I took a Sunday night game between the Patrios and Cowboys (arguably the most popular teams in the NFL) and compared it to a game between B.C. and Toronto.
