Cleveland will send Ben Wallace, Sasha Pavlovic, the 46th pick in Thursday’s draft and cash to the Suns for O’Neal.

I want Lebron to re-sign in Cleveland. Lebron + Shaq would be fun to watch next year!

Shaq to Cleveland is like morning wood, a usually good thing at a far less useful point in time.

As a Cavs fan, I don't really like this. Desperation move.

I 100% agree. Desperation moves like this only hurt the Cavs, and won't help them at all.

It's too bad Lebron has put so much pressure on the cavs management because building that team will take time.

I haven't checked out the cap implications, but isn't this simply a no-lose deal for the Cavs? Pavlovic is our AP, Wallace isn't the Chicago Wallace and the 46th is just another garbage pick. Unless Shaq is signed contractually for 3 years or something, it's not a bad deal at all on Cleveland's end.

Cleveland can't loose in this deal. They give up nothing and get Shaq on an expiring deal.

Rumor is Amare will be traded too, possibly for T-Mac's expiring contract. If that happens expect Nash to be traded (or request a trade) pretty quick cause there's no way he's signing an extension with the Suns!

Don't get me wrong, Shaq is a huge upgrade from that loser Ben Wallace and Pavlovic was useless. It's definitely an upgrade, but this deal should have been made at the trade deadline.

I don't think so. As a GM you would have thought based on their play during the season they had enough to win the East. But they really could not handle Howard and the Magic. Shaq actually had a good year and as long as he is playing with a great player(Wade, Nash, Lebron) is still going to be a factor. He can't be moved from the basket and when they inevitably to to help on Lebron he will be wide open. Just like he has been for the previous two. Sure he ain't the dominant player he once was but he is a mountain at both ends. Nobody will outmuscle him.

Plus it's a one year try it out deal. It's win all the way and a nice move for the Suns as well. They are going to just blow it up and start over and this was step one.

Are you sure Shaqs contraxct is expiring. I thought it had another year or two left which is why it was considered such an albatross.

Its definately a despiration move. Clevland assumes if they can win at least one championship that Lebron will stay (good luck with that).

From ESPN

Quote:
The Cavs believed O'Neal was the better option because he has just one year left on his contract, and will not eat up cap space that will enable them to pursue players such as Chris Bosh in next summer's star-studded free-agent class.

No. As a GM you would have thought based on their play during the regular season that any team with an effective pick and roll and matchup issues such as Orlando could cause you trouble in the playoffs. Unless you're Danny Ferry, then you'd overlook it and stand pat. You would have addressed that need at the trade deadline with Wally Szczerbiak's expiring contract. Also, they were vulnerable down low. It was no secret that they couldn't guard Dwight Howard.

Not that this trade helps their pick and roll defense at all, but it fixes the Dwight issue.

If they made this trade in February, along with dealing Wally for a good pick and roll defender, they would have won the title this year.

Sure, Shaq will be a factor. But this team's weakness is the pick and roll, so they're still a piece away.

I'm sure they figured that they could just give Howard his points and beat the rest of them. Heck even when the Magic beat the Raps it wasn't Howard who really killed them it was Nelson and Lewis and the Turk. But Howard is getting better and even with the refs giving him a queer assortment of fouls and techs he was a bigger factor than could have been forseen. Heck who didn't think it was a Cavs/LA final. Nobody pundit wise. So I think it's a 20/20 hindsight thing to say they should have made a move.

I was afraid of that. Mind you, we were looking at paying another 20 million for another season of Shaq. I take it this isn't the same Wallace I remember from Detroit?

Wallace is useless, but there has been a lot of talk about him retiring. I just can't see him leaving 14 million on the table.

Possibly a buy out.

Enjoy the memories. Amare and Barbosa are in rumors to go to Houston. Nash can opt out of his contract this year and if they trade away more players he will most assuredly do just that. I'm thinking the Suns would like him to do so.

That team that played with such pizzaz is gonzo.

Become a Blazers fan till they rebuild.

Stupid Spurs. Not only do they play a boring style themselves, but they pretty much made sure it'll be a long time before we see a true run-and-gun offence again.

(unless I'm mistaken and there's already a mid-2000s Suns clone)

If Nash comes north to TO, I might have to start cheering for my first ever Toronto-based team.

Suns are the worst franchise in sports when it comes to asset management.
