I know the Onion is a satire but this woman hits it on the head. Being a Nice Guy to a woman will get you placed in the "Friend Zone" and she will never, ever, sleep with you.

I really like you. I do. You're so nice, and sweet, and you listen to all my problems and respond with the appropriate compliments. But, well, I don't really see a relationship in our future. It would be terrible if we let sex destroy this great friendship we have where I get everything I want and you get nothing you want. Don't you think?

Every guy needs to learn how to be a jerk early in life. Even if they are faking it. Strange how evolutionary basic instincts fail here - or is that the fault of society making us overly polite and socially self-conscious and passive? I guess part of me would still like the "club and drag back to my cave" mentality.

-edit like Malcolm said, friend-zone can be avoided by clear intentions. Friend zone is the result of being too passive or unconfident in expressing what you really want to get noticed by the girl.

BTW, I probably have zero authority on what I am talking about since I've been friend zoned more times than I can count.

It's got to be the same thing for girls. If a guy is all ears and never an ass, how is she ever going to know that he's willing to do something for her? I don't know if I can explain this properly, but a girl needs to see your jackass side once in awhile so that she can tell you not to be that way. Then when you comply for a few days, she knows that her words mean something to you. It's all subliminal, but I swear it's the truth.

If you want some kind of attraction to happen you have to leave "space". It's just my opinion but what we often label as "niceness" is just a bunch of phony spineless crap. And smothering is not nice! If someone compliments me too much and always agrees with me, whether friend or date , I think they're either nuts or an arse kissing lying sack of crap. Totally different than nice.

There's a major difference between being nice and sucking up/ass kissing.

Bending over backwards for you, constant compliments, etc... that's ass kissing

Helping you because they are close by/doing something unimportant, giving you a lift home because you live close, etc... that's being nice.
