CP Official 'Fishing Hole' Thread
It seems with the addition of 'Speed on Green' cameras and the recession the police are starving for revenue again and are dusting off the old radar guns and taking to the streets in locations where speed limits seem oddly low for the street size design or where speed limits drop off dramatically and where they can hide from view. I don't think someone doing 65 km/h in a 50km/h that seems like it really should be 60km/h should get targeted nor should someone who is going at a 62 km/h clip while slowing down where the speed limit drops from 70km/h to 50km/h should be ticketed either.
In that spirit I would like to start a 'fishing hole thread' where posters help other posters out by mentioning these tricky spots where they have seen cops out recently so that drivers who for the most part are safe can be aware to keep to posted speed limits to avoid slipping up and rendering themselves vulnerable to getting a borderline ticket.
Explain the address or approximate area of the location, mention the speed limit changes or other circumstances that make it tricky, and mention the part about the location that makes it easy for the police to hide.
I will go first:
(1) I got ticketed making an illegal left turn on 9th Ave SE going north bound on 7th St. SE after a Flames game. 7th Street goes along the west bank of the Elbow River before and meets 9th Ave at a bridge. There is a sign saying it's illegal to turn left that that intersection. It's tricky to pick up on that when there is gridlock after a Flames game and numerous other motorists make that illegal turn as well as if it were normal. Anyways the Police hide in the Fort Calgary parking lot and reel in the drivers. When I was caught there were 5 police cars working an assembly line getting tickets.
(2) Going Eastbound on Bow Trail towards downtown past the Greyhound Depot. The speed limit is 50km/h despite the road being four lanes wide and devoid of traffic outside of business hours. It probably should be more like 60km/h for that stretch until you get to Metro Ford (I didn't get pulled over, but saw the Police at work) In fact if you actually slow down to 50km/h you feel like you're in a playground zone while everyone else speeds by. The police hide in the Staples parking lot on the right side across from Shaw Millenium park. They like this location because they have enough room in the parking lot so they can tandem with another officer to ensure that while one is writing a ticket the other can man the radar gun and catch more drivers 'dangerously speeding by at 65 km/h.'
(3) Westbound on 16th Ave just past the Shaganappi interchange the speed limit drops quickly from 70km/h to 50km/h. There is a commercial parking lot tucked away on the right. You do the math. (No, I didn't get pulled over here either, but saw them out working that hole last night at 7PM).

Coming up 16th ave westbound after it crosses Deerfoot. There is an entrance to a trailer park. The cops sit there all the time. Speed limit is 60 km/hr. It is posted but for some reason everyone flies up there.

1) N.B. Centre St. at the top of the hill from the bridge. They hide behind the bushes on the east side on 7th (?) Ave NE. It's a 50 and everyone is usually doing 65+ up that hill
2) W.B. 16 Ave N.E. going up from Deerfoot. They hide at the entrance to the trailer park. It's a 60 zone; people usually doing 80 throug there

That's where I got my first speeding ticket back in High School. Ghost car in that parking lot got me doing 10 over.

Westbound on 16th Ave, at the crosswalk just after speed limit goes from 70 to 50. It is after you go over Shaganappi Trail. Usually there once a week.
Westbound on 17th Ave, at the top of hill on the road before 85th Street, they used to be there all the time, but not in a while but they will likely be back

17th ave west of Westside Rec Center. Speed limit is 60 km/h but it should be at least 80....and people treat it that way

Always police there.
Also be careful going south on Sarcee Trail (just as you come up the hill).

1) Southbound 52st NE, just before the 16th Ave overpass. They like to park their cars down the hill, so you can't see em, and hide behind the light pole, so they see you just as you come up the incline. Speed is 60km/hr, but people tend to speed up to 70.
2) Barlow Trail south at the Max Bell entrance. I've seen the police here a few times. You don't see them until its too late because of the little hill you have to drive over. Speed limit is 50km/hr, but the previous section on Barlow is 70, and a lot of people miss it or don't slow down enough.
3) 16th Ave Eastbound, anywhere East of Deerfoot. They like to hide in the pillars of the overpasses with unmarked cars, usually facing East, sometimes West. The limit is 90km/hr, but its damn near at the edge of the city, with nothing but hills on either side, so the actual speed tends more towards 100-105.

They are always in various places in the Crowfoot LRT construction area...

Southbound 14th St NW at Northmount Dr, at the bottom of the hill coming down from the 14th St/John Laurie Blvd interchange. I think the speed is 50, but it's all but impossible to come down that hill under 65.

I got nailed there 5 years ago. Was going 69 in the 50, first time and last time I was pulled over.

This is just silly. The police are out there trying to make the streets safer and you guys are going to help people avoid these things on a public forum? This is disgusting, if people don't want speeding tickets they just shouldn't speed, simple as that.
Hey, we might as well start a thread letting people know where checkstops are going to be while we're at it, you a-holes.

How is telling people to slow down and obey the speed limit/ other traffic laws in any way making our roads more dangerous? If no one violated traffic law in any of the locations mentioned, how is that a bad outcome? (unless of course you consider the ticket revenue lost as being a more important consideration)

NB 14th st just before Chicken on the Way. They hang out in that liquor store parking lot behind a sandwich board.
SB 14th st again, just after the bridge, they're always hiding on 10th ave. You can't see them until it's too late because of the train bridge. This spot pisses me off something fierce.
WB Memorial or Parkdale Blvd (not sure what it's called at this exact point) right after the Sev after Crowchild, they're always hiding on that one street (26th or 27th). And when there's not a cop radaring, there's a multanova van.
There is always multanova in the playground zone EB 26th ave just after 20th st.
NB 4th st W in the school zone at 25th often cops radaring and often multanova
SB center st school zone at 35th
Hmm, I guess the last couple weren't fishing holes so much as places that legitimately deserve enforcement. Those first two 14th st ones are total BS fishing holes though.

I was being sarcastic. I was just trying to beat the self righteous guys to the punch. Just wait til Jolinarofmalkshor (or whatever his name is) sees this thread.
Also, Canyon Meadows drive, right at the bottom of the hill by the pink condos, before you get to McLeod, when heading eastbound.
