NHL Director of Officiating: Furlatt made the right call
Sigh... good job NHL
Quote:
Not only was the 37-year-old referee not chastised or reprimanded for waving off an Olli Jokinen powerplay goal in which Curtis Glencross was somehow called for goalie interference, he actually drew praise from NHL Director of Officiating Stephen Walkom yesterday.
"It was a tough call and a ballsy call, but it was the right call -- a great call," an emphatic Walkom told the Sun. "Our guys are the first to step up if they do make a mistake. I think Mick McGeough showed that years ago. But if they haven't made an error, they shouldn't be chastised for it."
Walkom cited rule 69.3 which states: "If an attacking player establishes a significant position within the goal crease, so as to obstruct the goalkeeper's vision and impair his ability to defend his goal, and a goal is scored, the goal will be disallowed."
was not a significant position,
the stick above the shoulders one was right.

Now I can't wait to see them be inundated with tape of Holmstrom, Franzen, Smyth, etc goals since none of those should count either anymore.
Exactly. How is that not a goal when probably 100 times this season, Kipper was being almost sat on in the crease and the opposition scored a (seemingly) legit goal?
This is total horse $hit.

I think the officiating is turning into a complete joke. I think it's about time to have video replay for EVERYTHING. Penalties, goals, offsides, icings. The only reason to have them out there would be to drop the puck and break up fights. These jokers cant be trusted to call the game fairly and correctly.

I don't get it, what exactly is the rule then? You can't stand in the crease? If that's how they want to start calling it they better start going to video review for those calls, because I'm not even sure that Glencross was in the crease when the goal was scored, it was very close.
That being said, I don't understand why having your skate on the edge of the crease should be cause for disallowing a goal. Watching the replay, I thought it was a PERFECT screen by Glencross, he made zero contact with the goalie, didn't get in his way to make a save, and completely blocked Backstrom's view.......

Not a bad idea at all!
However, The key to making it work would be to utilize the Broadcasters replay capabilities, the calls would be decided in seconds. Leave Toronto to deal with questionable goals, so they still feel needed.
Good grief. Better get out the KY jelly for tonight. Probably need it in the playoffs too.

But Holstrom and the wings do it all the time? I guess the NHL is admitting to the double standard.

"Even though at the time of the goal he's not bumping him, if the goalie can't do his job, it's no goal. There was incidental contact and the goalie was distracted and unable to get set for the shot. You can't visually interfere while the goalie is doing his job in the blue paint."
This is the NHL director of officiating???

IMO, BS like this is should be talked about by the media way more than the Ovechkin celebrations. No, lets talk about the best player, celebrating his 50th goal, for about 5 seconds afterwards. Lets not talk about the "quality" of the NHL officials. Is it taboo? Can we not actually question them or hold them accountable. No, we cant do that.
Who gives an F about celebrations, when officials are calling crap like this that REALLY affects the game, playoffs positions, and possibly the Stanley Cup (Brett Hull '99).

Does anyone see this "incidental contact"? I would assume that the Director of Officiating would at least watch the play before commenting on it.
I really hope someone in the national media calls him on this, because this doesn't make any sense. I understand that it's a fast game and mistakes are made, but........ this isn't a mistake?
