Bell introduces "iPhone killer"
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servl...echnology/home
Better rates, and same functionality as the iPhone. Not a bad plan, with everyone up in arms about Rogers' offering.

That's awesome!
Let's hope Roger's follows suit by making their plans unlimited data.

Well that's nice.
Thing is, that phone has almost none of the features I want.
No Wi-Fi, no 3rd party applications, brutal web browser, and no method of syncing information to your PC.
Assuming you don't need any of the features I mentioned, the Instinct is a rather cheap, very sexy smart phone that can easily cover most peoples style and functionality needs. Coupled with the Bell plans, I hope most people eyeing the iPhone opt for this option instead.

Unfortunately, the Instinct is really just a pretty touch screen phone. It is pretty good at being a phone. But it doesn't match up to the iPhone asa data device in terms of email, browser, applications, polish, itunes integration, etc. It also doesn't have wi-fi support which is a pretty big deal I think.
The other phone to look into is the HTC Diamond that was just released on Telus.
If you're waiting for a touchscreen CDMA (ie Telus or Bell) phone to potentially rival the iPhone then the next one on the horizon is the HTC Dream running Google Android. It is still 6 months away unfortunately. But it looks AWESOME and should integrate completely with a Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Maps, etc.

Streaming music is another $15/month. Tuner is the app I use the most on my iPhone. The GPS is an extra cost too with Bell, but the article doesn't state exactly how much that costs. So, if you want to use the GPS & stream music, you'll probably be paying more for the "unlimited data" using the Instinct on Bell than you would with the iPhone on Rogers.

I want that. I always said I would get a Blackberry once they had a touchscreen, that is the biggest reason I use a Treo.

It's sort of funny seeing a CTV Globe media newspaper run a story claiming Bell is coming out with the iPhone killer.

how many so called iphone killers have we had already? Seems like there's a knock-off coming out every week, and neither of them has come even close to equaling, never mind killing, the ipod in terms of quality. I think what most fail to realize is that apple spent years in R+D on that one phone....you can't just whip up a competitor in a few months in the midst of all your other products, and then expect it to be as good.
I don't think even the Thunder will be up to par...and I say that as someone who owns RIM stock.

i don't think the Thunder is meant to be a competitor with the Iphone. They are just going with the times and getting a touch phone in the mix. To me, it will be a huge improvement over the HTC Touch and the UT Starcom that I currently have.
As for quality, I think when they release it, it will be bang on - I really havn't had a bad thing to say with any of the BB's i have had in the past.

Looks like Bell is changing their logo tomorrow as well.
Looks like it was done with Microsoft Paint...

They are also re-launching Mobility, so brand new plans.
Not sure if it is good or bad, with Cope and Oosterman running things and now that they have brought in all of their people....

I have seen the plans, they are average nothing that will cause the stores to get busy.

True story:
Apparently when Cope jumped over to Bell, one of the first things he wanted to do was to make it so all lower-end plans only gave people 200 - 500 Evening & Weekend minutes... his reasoning was that they originally offered Unlimited E&W because only business people had cells, so they never used it, but since regular consumers entered the market, they should make some $$$ off of it.
Hehe good thing for Bell that idea didn't fly.
I wonder if they are still thinking that the other companies will follow them and charge $9 for SAF...

Here's my design for an "iPhone killer".
It's exactly like the iPhone, complete with full touch screen capabilities. But if you so choose, you can slide-flip up the screen to reveal a keypad. You could still type using the touch screen if you chose, but touch screen typing sucks. It would also make viewing movies easier.

This thread reminds me of Maddox's page on the iPhone from a while back...
http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=iphone (NSFW language, but it's just text - no super-obscene pics)
(...I'm an iPhone user/lover, btw, but still think that page is hilarious... as are his others)

I like the physical feedback of a button getting pushed.
