Portable Navigation Systems
Ok getting a new car, but didnt want to pay the 2000 for the built in navigation system although it wouldve been awesome. But too pricey. Was told by others that a portable one is much cheaper, even after installation.
So I need your advice on which ones work the best. I live in San Jose, CA so I need one that works best in the USA (I dont know if the country makes a different, but I wasnt sure if I bought one designed specifically for Canada if everything would be in kilometers and not allow me to make U turns, which are perfectly legal here ).
Thanks,
me

I'm sure any navigation systems you buy in the USA will be fore the USA and not Canada
All the adds I hear are for Tom Tom, so check them out

I use a Garmin, you can buy different maps for different regions. I'm sure they all come with a N.A. if you but it in the states or Canada.

You typically load it up with the map of interest. North America/Europe/South America etc..
Garmin, Magellan, Tom Tom are all fine.
Look for mention of WAAS or SiRF.

We've used a Garmin Nuvi 370(?), with great success. Does both North America and Europe.

They are, but the GPS software can still tell you to do them.
I also suggest Garmin.

I bought a Navigon 5100 for sale at Futureshop.com for $200. It's great. The SD card that came with it had maps for Canada and the US, and it has full text to speech, which I figure is fairly important for a car GPS. It also has a suction cup arm that I attach to the windshield, so I can attach or detach the GPS as I see fit.

I have been hearing a lot of good things about the Dash. It's based on open source and is internet connected. It recognizes other dash users on the road and based on their speed vs the speed limit of the road, it will give you real time traffic volumes. You also get real time speed trap reporting, yahoo local etc.
You can even get the price of gas at various stations around you and find specfic things near you or your destination.

So I looked at Garmin's this weekend. Liked the 360. It costs about $350. My question was that the higher ones, ie the 650..are the extra features already worth it? I think they come with bluetooth..and some games.
Thanks CPers..happy Motoring!

So with that type of setup, particularily the traffic volumes, how does it get that info, the blue tooth connection to your phone? Is there a subscription fee?

Just got my Garmin Nuvi 360. Great little unit and completely portable (easy to detach with long battery life) and comes with it's own carrying case.
Great buy for just over $300, including shipping.
