post-Secoundary education
"This is a student run site with the primary purpose of bringing attention to the unjust practices of administration regarding the treatment of sessional instructors at the University of Calgary"
I strongly suggest taking a look at this website. It has some stunning facts about how sessional instructors are paid. Really makes you wonder about the state of our Universities.
There is also a petition that i think is worth signing whether you are a student or not.

(sorry about that)

"Student run" should be hyphenated.

I agree this needs to be brought up more often. I'm at the UofL instead of UofC, but the same things go one there and everywhere.
I know many great profs who had to leave the university because they weren't offered fulltime work, and couldn't afford to keep doing so.
A masters or a PHD for temp work? you have to be kiddding!

I've said it before and I'll say it again... UofC and UofA need some serious kicks in the ass from the government, the private sector and community at large. They don't take care of their own and they're too concerned with "legacy projects" and prestige rather than taking care of their students and non-tenured faculty. $30,000/yr for a PhD is sick. I can make more than that working retail even if I was a high school dropout.
Dr. Dube is an outstanding professor and a good guy. I hope he finds a good position at a University that appreciates him.

I had Dr. Dube for 2 classes... didn't really like him that much to be honest... though I know he had a cult following of students who attended all his classes. IMO he wasn't very interesting...

I scrolled down and read the last comment and couldnt hep but laugh-
“I've only had one class with Dr. Dube (Poli 201) and what I remember the most from that class isn't the material.."
Sounds like that guy learned a lot.

In that case, at least spell "grammar" rightly.

Didn't something similar happen to Linda Henderson?

You'll also not that I spelled spelling incorrectly.
This thread is turning into an ugly Alannis song without the cheating boyfriend and the movie theatre.

If you went the U of C, you'll probably know of her. She was a very popular professor with the students. I know she won many teaching awards, but apparently, the U of C didn't want to renew her contract. I only had one class with her, but I know others who took sociology just to have her as a professor.

Yeah we had a lot of professors at the U of A who were/are in the same situation. I remember my ECON prof told us about the situation he was in and was going to have to leave because he wasn't getting the monetary rewards he should have gotten. On his evaluations, he was always one of the top 5 professors. As another poster suggested, both the U of A and U of C have to shape up the way they treat the profs rather then focusing on legacy projects etc.

I love when the grammar posts get out of control. I have a couple friends working towards doctorates now. One by one they are starting to realize that getting their degree is going to result in a boatload of debt and not much else (at least in their fields).

Professor Henderson is an amazing lady. I knew her son. She provided some informal counselling to me during a tough transitional time. Very sweet lady. I regret now never taking her up on an invitation to sit in on her class.

These universities really are going all to Hell if they're only issuing a single degree to multiple people.
For shame.
