I hate that they want to change that, but I'm still excited that there will be a GI Joe movie.

Jeez, why make a movie about a doll, when you can make a movie about this guy.
It amazes me, you read about battles, and its so rare that people go that far above and beyond.
I mean, you've got your people who kind of fall apart and have a fear of dying so they freeze in place.
You have people that go back to their training, do everything that needs to be done.
Then you have people that do what this guy did.
Pretty amazing stuff.
(I never actually knew that G.I. Joe was a marine. I always thought that he was army infantry, because the term G.I. more often refers to army.

It's not about offending someone in Karachi or Paris or Palembang, it's about getting someone in Karachi, Paris or Palembang to buy a ticket to the movie and maybe some of the toys. It's the American way.

Good find...
It does make sense to internationalize GI Joe, since Dubya has trashed the US military's brand
Some crazy militiamen in the montana hills will hate the idea of a 'Real American Hero' becoming a Real Belgian/Egyptian/Japanese/Autralian Hero...but it reminds me of Clancy's Rainbow Six franchise.
Also, Destro is the main villan in the movie? WDF?

Also interesting that GI Joe was meant to celebrate a Medal of Honor recipient from each branch of the US Military

Frm the GI JOE wiki
Paramount has commissioned the development of a live-action G.I. Joe film following the success of the 2007 Transformers feature film. The film is being slated for a 2009 release date with Stephen Sommers as the director and Stuart Beattie as the scriptwriter. The film will feature an international task force based in New York (previously Brussels) called G.I.J.O.E, (a backronym for Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity), instead of the US-centric team featured in all previous incarnations, in order to internationally market the film. The film will feature Destro and the Baroness as the main villains, the Dreadnoks as mercenaries and Cobra's hired muscle, and Cobra Commander in a "puppet master" role. Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow's rivalry will be one of the film's main plot points.

GI Joe a member of an International Force based in Brussels.
What fracking BS. What are they going to do in Brussles, likely the same thing they always do over there, sit in a sharing circle mastubating to the music of enya.
This makes me sick.

Now thats pure comedy.
It almost like the line in Austin Powers when his dad states
"I only hate two things, people who are intolerant of other peoples cultures, and the Dutch"
Anyone else have the GI-Joe Aircraft carrier and mobile command center when you were growing up.
I remember when action figures were like a foot tall, and not the 4" things that kids play with now.

If they do this to GI Joe - I will make it my personal mission to BT the frack out of this movie. Last time I checked Cobra Commander wasnt an Arab, he was an American arms dealer from South America.
How is GI Joe going to defend Americas overseas oil interests from the forces of doom if their base isnt in the New Mexico ish area.
My childhood is slowly being ripped up by the delears of death. At least they didnt quite abortion the Transformers movie (truth be told I actually quite liked it).

They could make a movie about that guy but it would probably look too much like Rambo.

Probably because Cobra Commander was such a whiney Biaatch, that mostly only ever said things like "Nooooooooo" or "Retreat!"... doesn't make much of a hollywood movie bad guy... Destro was always undermining him and calling him a fool etc... didn't he even take over at one point...

I've always enjoyed comments like this. How is changing a toy to reflect a contemporary situation ripping up your childhood?
Does the alteration of G.I. Joe in the present invalidate your past experiences as a child?
Holy drama queen.
That said... Wow they are being silly. Why exactly is it based out of Brussels now? How does that target an American population any more then the original? Sounds like the people in charge are completely missing the point of leveraging a brand.

Cobra Commander was a terrible villian, but he was handicapped by the one shot battalion killed rule of the GI Joe Universe.
Destro took over, but he was like Doctor Claw, at the end of every episode he would retreat and swear revenge.
The one thing thats too bad is that the whole GI Joe crew was filled with killable characters that you wanted to die in the most horrific manner, but they always won in the end.
Snow Job and Shrip Wreck come to mind as useless.
I remember the site somethingawful.com used to have excellent after mission reports from the view of Cobra.

A movie glorifying an American soldier right now would probably have a rather limited global appeal. It wouldn't even have much appeal to lots of Americans.
Like it or lump it, and all politics aside, the American military isn't getting a whole lot of love in the world.
That being said, this is a pretty stupid idea.

Yeah no kidding.
I'd rather they make no movie at all....than screw up the whole idea of GI Joe.
Ridiculous.

I had the old school early 70's large sized GI Joe. I recall I had his jeep and a chopper. They're probably worth a mint now.
