Justice for an idiot driver
How many times have you been driving, only to see some vehicle go flying past you, darting in and out of traffic only to wish there were cops ahead to catch the guy?
I was driving home along McKnight on Saturday night, through the construction, this guy in a red sports car, flies by me on the right. He pulled in behind the van in front of me, then decided he had enough time before the far right lane ended to get infront of the van so did. At the top of the hill (going over 36th street) two cops walk in the middle of the street and pull the guy over. As I drove by when he was talking to the cop, the cop was reaming him out and the guy seemed clueless to what he did wrong.
Finally the cops were there when I wished they were!

I had something similar on John Laurie.
I was driving along McKnight and further ahead saw and unmarked police pickup pull a u-turn over the median (he turned his lights on when he did this, otherwise I would not have known it was a police vehicle, even when I pulled up behing him at the next light). Traffic was moderate to heavy, everyone going about the speed limit but changing lanes wouldn't get you very far, so I just stayed behind him all the way onto John Laurie. Going by Nose Hill a car comes up from behind, lane hopping like crazy as he wove through the traffic as quickly as possible. A soon as he darted past the pickup, the pickup pull ed behind him, turned on the lights and pulled him over.

On a trip down to Arizona a few years back, my family was driving through Salt Lake City, just leaving the southern city limits I believe. The interstate was as crowded as you can imagine, being that we went through there at 5pm or so. Then some jackass in a red convertible just rips past us, weaving in an out like he was in the sequel to the Transporter. Needless to say, we were fairly annoyed -- traffic violators are a sensitive topic in my family.
About 40 kilometers later traffic backed up to a standstill. Turns out there had been a massive accident and we could see some smoke rising further up near an interchange. As we finally inch past, lo and behold, it's Speed Daddy's red convertible upside down and on fire. There was a mini van on the other side of the highway that had it's back right side torn to shreds. I didn't see any people standing around other then the firefighters and police, but it was a fairly grizzly scene.
I've never understood why some people drive like that. They are tempting fate every time they hit the road...

Wicked... I love it when this happens... I have one too.
I live in the south and had to go to the north very briefly. I was cruising the Deerfoot and noticed a multanova under the peigan tr overpass (going south). Mental note...
So there I am, 20 minutes later, going south. I was in the left lane, keeping pace with the left laners, just passing 17th. I saw a green durango in the center lane just ahead, so I looked very closely and saw the tell-tale shotgun inbetween the front seats, plus the barely visible lights in the corners of the tinted back window.
So, I was about to drop ~10 kph just because I knew that the multanova was coming up, but this made me do it right away, much to the chagrin of the guy behind me.
This young guy, maybe 18 in a chitbox sunfire with a giant spoiler couldn't see around my truck and assumed that I was just a left lane abuser/slowpoke.
My intention was to get into the center lane, but the kid switched lanes, blew past me, and past the cop.
I kid you not, the cop waited for the guy to blow past the multanova, then he flicked on his lights, and had him pulled over just past the calf robe.
It was so funny. Little punk got two speeding tickets for the same incident.

A couple of years ago, we were driving in the middle lane on Glenmore EB, and some young asshat in a Mustang blows past us on the right doing at least 130+. Then he cut in front and across 2 lanes whilst continuing at his breakneck speed. My wife exclaimed "where's a cop when you need one?"; about a second after that, a unmarked policecar that apparently was traveling behind us lit up his lights and went off in pursuit. It took him about 5 km's to catch the guy too.
Justice served.

I object to the "some young asshat" phrasing some of you are using. I am in my twenties, and like to drive fast. Doesn't matter your age, who doesn't like to drive fast?
But I don't do it unsafely, and I don't do it when there are lots of other cars around. AND most importantly, I don't do it at speeds that are unsafe for the road conditions or my driving skill.
I get really annoyed when there is any sort of traffic and some "pimped out" Honda decides that it isn't moving fast enough for him and darts around everywhere.
One time I was travelling south on Deerfoot, and going about 110 or so, and this little Honda blows right by me weaving everywhere, going so fast he can't keep it in his lane. Wow. We both go on the Anderson rd. ramp, and sure enough, there is a bike cop hiding in the median. Lights go on, Honda pulled over, me grinning like crazy as I drive by.

In this case it was "some young asshat". I saw him sitting in his car when the cops had pulled him over. Unless he has some great anti-aging formula that he's not sharing with the world, he was in his early twenties.

Guess what, the roads you are on are designed for the posted speed limit, so if you are driving more than the speed limit, it is unsafe, no matter what the conditions.
If you want to go fast, do it at a race track where you're with other like minded and trained people. Trust me, you will come to enjoy your hobby at a much higer level, and you won't be risking the safety of anyone.

Bovine fecal matter.
Speed limits are designed to accomidate the lowest common denominator.
100 on Deerfoot on a nice day is like walking.
Ditto for 80 on Glenmore, Sarcee, Stoney Tr, Crowchild...

I don't have anything to say to SeeGeeWhy, except for the same reason people go 10 under the speed limit in summer, is the reason I go 10 over. Because I feel like it, and it's safer. For me, driving safer means going faster to avoid people who drive too slowly.
I could argue about this topic all day, because I think that slow drivers are more dangerous than they think they are. I am fully supportive of the police issuing tickets for people driving under the speed limit as well as over.
I treat the speed limit as a guide, not a limit. Welcome to Calgary, welcome to Deerfoot Trail. If you don't like speeding then don't take that road. Or at the very least get OUT of the left lane.
Slow drivers always think they are safer and more skilled than fast drivers, when that just isn't the case.

I am objecting because I still do it when the roads are clear. It's no one's business how fast I go when there is no one else on the road. When there are lots of cars on the road, however, you have to respect that everyone has the same rights to get where they are going, so you have to maintain a proper speed, whether that be slower or faster than you would normally go.

Basically trying to justify yourself breaking the law? Good one.
Speeding is speeding, the circumstances don't matter.

REDVAN I got a story for you.
I was basically a young ass hat when I had my 92 Laser RS about a year ago, but I was usually pretty good at obeying school/playground zones. So I slow down to the 30kph when I get into my communities playground zone. It's a pretty short zone, but it was a curve to it, so you can't see down the whole thing. The guy behind me decides he doesn't want to slow down for the playground zone and passes me. I catch a look at him and he is a middle age guy. Probably like most of you old guys in this thread who drive their Buick's 10kph below the limit with their right blinker on.
I remember thinking to myself, "what an ass, not only did he pass me in a playground zone, he is speeding too. I would love to see a cop when we come around the bend." Much to my surprise, and probably his, a cop walks out onto the road and flags him down. I've lived in the same community for most of my life and that was probably the third police speed trap I have ever seen. And our community has only one main drag. Well I laughed pretty hard all the way home.

Until you total your car and everyone else in your age group has their insurance go up because of the reckless way you and other like-minded people drive.

I kinda worry about you when you go posting something like this. I won't call you an asshat, but your attitude is very stereotypical of a young male in his early 20's. That being - "the rules don't apply to me".
- The speed limit is not a required speed. It is a maximum speed limitation. Going over is illegal - just because you don't want it to be illegal doesn't make it legal. You are breaking the law, and risking the lives of others by doing so.
- Driving under the speed limit is not only legal - most of the time it is safer. I can't believe I have to point that out. It comes down to a simple question of reaction time, breaking distance, and impact force. You can argue that you are more "engaged and aware" because you are driving at unsafe speed, but you can't win an argument with physics.
- You seem to be under the impression that you are smarter than the millions of dolalrs and thousands of people who have put their time into studying highway civics. Newsflash - you are are part of the lowest common denominator. You are relatively inexperienced, probably don't have a family of your own, and worse yet -like to drive fast. That's a deadly combination. Short of the elderly, your cohort of drivers is the most likely to cause an accident.
