Default By-election results

If anyone is interested in following the by-election results, here's a link that is supposed to provide up to the minute results for both Calgary-Elbow and Drumheller-Stettler. The results are just starting to come in for Drumheller-Stettler, but nothing yet from Calgary-Elbow.

Well, Drumheller is staying PC by a wide margin, Calgary-Elbow looks interesting though.

It would be an incredible shock if the PCs didn't get back in in Drumheller-Stettler. I'm hoping the Liberals can finsish second ... the Liberal candidate is the strongest of all the candidates IMO. He's a really good guy who is very active in the community with youth sports, and he's been a reeve or councillor municipally. I've worked with him at community events, and he's pretty well liked in the Drum area. I doubt he'll pull many votes in other areas of the constituency though. The Alliance would probably do better, but they have a pretty weak candidate.

Calgary-Elbow looks like a live one though. GO JANE. go liberals.

Looks like the gaps narrowing, but to be honest, I think we do need the PC candidate to lose to send a message, its just unfortunate that a Liberal would take the seat.

The Calgary Elbow one looks very interesting.

Having known Craig Cheffins I am pretty sure he has a stronghold in Lakeview. None of those polls have even reported yet.

Looks like Mr Stelmach might be getting a wakeup call.

Interesting to see that it is a neck and neck race for second in the Drumheller riding between the Libs and the So Creds. I didn't think anyone voted for the So Creds anymore.

The success of the So Cred here is due to two things ... one is that he's a former town councilor, so he might be getting some backers from his civic career. I'm not so sure if that's not a liability for him though ... he also pi$$ed a few people off when he was a councilor. He ran for mayor and lost that election. I think more of his success is coming from the AA having a really weak candidate here. That means the So Creds are getting a lot of disgruntled RW protest votes ... voters who are mad at the PCs, but can't bring themselves to vote for the Liberals. Given the choice between the So Cred and AA candidates here, the So Cred is a lot better candidate. The only thing to look for in this by-election is whether the PCs win it by more or less than 50% of the popular vote. If they don't get 50% of the popular vote in their heart land, that in itself should send a message to Stelmach. The former MLA was the deputy premier, so if they lose Klein's seat, and support in the former deputy premier's constituency is eroded to below 50% in their rural heart land, that's gotta send them some kind of wakeup call.

Think this will wake up Stelmach?
Or will he use this to further his bias against Calgary?

As recent as the last provincial election in 2004. The Liberals won three seats in Calgary ... Dave Taylor in Calgary Currie, David Swann in Calgary Mountainview and Harry Chase in Calgary Varsity.

I wonder if the Liberal candidate will understand that this is not a vote for Liberal policies but rather a vote against Stelmach.

I think that's part of it, but not all of it. This candidate was a rookie last time and put up a good fight against a legendary politician.

Also, I think Calgary is becoming too big of a city for conservative politics.

How many of us know that Mayer Bronco is quietly setting the stage for the Liberal Leadership race?

Politics in Alberta are boring without Ralph Klein.
